George Zimmer is an American businessman, founder of the Men’s Wearhouse, and founder, Chairman and CEO of Generation Tux. In the same spirit of Bill Graham, George is a long-time secular supporter of Chabad SF and the Bill Graham Menorah Project.

Zimmer was born in New York City, attended primary school in Scarsdale, New York, and graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Upon graduation, he worked as a substitute teacher before joining his father in the clothing manufacturing business.

He is most well-known to the public for the authentic personal commitment he communicated with his “I guarantee it” television commercials for the Men’s Wearhouse, the company he started in 1973. Over 40 years, he built Men’s Wearhouse into a multibillion-dollar company with loyal employees and customers that valued quality the products and service. The Men’s Wearhouse was voted one of the best companies to work for over 12 times in Fortune magazine’s annual list. In 2013, he launched an Oakland-based app-driven custom suit businesses, Generation Tux. These enterprises practice Georges business philosophy of “servant leadership” and employee empowerment.

In 1992 he set up a foundation to provided college scholarships to children of Men’s Wearhouse employees. In 2011 he was given the Outstanding Philanthropist Award by the Golden Gate Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

George an advocate and thought leader with the Patriotic Millionaires organization, which seeks to ease the social toll of income inequality.

He is the author of a proposal called, “A New Deal for the Middle Class”.

His experience caring for his mother, who died of cancer, led him to support research into medical marijuana and legalizing cannabis. George’s pioneering support for California’s Proposition 19 in 2010 empowered a state ballot movement that has legalized medical marijuana in 33 U.S. states and recreational cannabis in 11 states.

His “menschism” is well known to his friends, family, and the variety of communities he has touched with his generosity and essential goodness.
